Best Water Softener Salt Blocks, Tablets and Granular Salt in the UK

Based on my tests and research, these are the five best water softener salt blocks, tablets, and granular salts to try:

  1. Harvey’s Block Salt

I really love all of Harvey’s Water Softener systems, which is why I highly commend Harvey’s Block Salt, too! It’s quite affordable and comes in three packs of two blocks each, suitable for most popular water softeners today (not just Harvey’s).

It comes in the perfect size, only as big and heavy as a house brick. Furthermore, it dissolves well and is easy to handle, ensuring better cleaning and maintenance. While a bit pricey, it’s definitely worth the extra pounds for hassle-free use.

  1. Hydrosoft Tablets

The Hydrosoft Tablets are another excellent choice if you’re not a fan of salt blocks. They’re just as smooth hand easy to handle, having the strength and quality build to dissolve in water well. They’re also known as one of the purest water softening salt tablets available today.

While clean and easy to maintain, it comes in a 25-kilogram bag, so it may be difficult to handle during refills. With that said, it’s a small inconvenience considering it offers softer water at lower prices.

  1. Kinetico Block Salt

The Kinetico Block Salt is almost as similar as Harvey’s, coming in three bags of two blocks each. However, it falls a little bit short in terms of quality when comparing it to Harvey’s, though better than other block salts around. I commend it for how smooth it is and the way it dissolves completely into the water, though!

I just wish that they cared a bit more for shipping, as there’s a chance of receiving broken blocks. It’s still usable but can affect the water softener’s performance.

  1. Aquasol Water Softener Tablet Salt

While the Aquasol comes at a high price, you get what you pay for and receive only premium quality salts. Plus, it comes in five 25-kilogram bags, so it’s actually quite economical and lessens the hassle of repurchasing when you run out of one bag.

As for its quality, it’s made with pure salt and constructed to small tablets well, dissolving good enough to keep your salt tank clean. You don’t taste any salt in the water and it has a long lifespan before you need to replenish the tank!

  1. Water2Buy Crystals Salt for Water Softeners

Water2Buy is a bit more expensive than others, but as salt crystals, you can see why. It’s made with the top-quality salt and made into small crystals for even better dissolving.

It works on most water softeners and shows immediate and amazing results, from less limescale, easier cleaning, and NO salty taste when drinking. Furthermore, the salts last for AT LEAST a month before replenishing!

How to Choose the Right Water Softener Salt Blocks, Tablets, and Granular Salt

Besides these informative reviews, you also have to consider the following tips when getting water softener salt:

  1. Type of Salt

There are different forms of salt to choose from:

  • Evaporated salt pellets provide the best purity rates and are the most expensive. It makes your salt tank easier to clean and maintain
  • Solar salt pellets are the most common, sold in other pellet or crystal form. It may not be suited for you if you have very high levels of hard water
  • Rock salt resembles small pebbles and is cheaper. However, it doesn’t dissolve well and may be a hassle to maintain
  • Block salt is only used upon the recommendation of your water softener company, or if you have a water softener that can use block salt
  1. Your Health

Your health is a crucial factor that plays into your salt choice since our bodies react differently to salt. If you have kidney stones or a kidney condition, it’s best to go for potassium chloride. However, while a healthy nutrient and eco-friendly, take note that potassium chloride lowers blood pressure, too!

  1. The Price

Just like water softener prices, the cost of salt matters and you get what you pay for! I recommend that you set a reasonable budget that isn’t too cheap that leads to mundane performance. However, you don’t need to overspend and hurt your wallet along the way.

Frequently Asked Questions

To learn more about water softener salts, these are three frequently asked questions many ask related to it:

  1. What is water softener salt?

Water softener salt works with water softeners to remove all hard water minerals. This is done as water passes through resin beads, which then removes the hard water minerals.

It’s usually made with sodium chloride, though there’s an uncommon alternative known as potassium chloride.

  1. How can I fill up my water softener tank with salt?

All you need to do is to find the salt tank and open the lid to check the salt levels. If already half-empty, fill it up until the line, avoid overfilling it. I recommend that you check your salt levels once a month!

  1. Can I use other types of salt outside water softener salt blocks, tablets, or granular salt?

Some people have wondered f they can use table salt or ice melt salt in their water softeners.

That is a huge NO. These types of salt have smaller crystals, which result in mushing and less effective in softening your water. Plus, it makes it more hassling to clean your salt tank!
